FIVE men were arrested by Gauteng police yesterday morning in connection with the murder of South African reggae legend Lucky Dube.
Dube’s murder has sent shock waves around the country, with friends and relatives saying they believed he was assassinated.
Police Superintendent Eugene Opperman yesterday said the five suspects, aged between 31 and 35, were arrested in the Spruitview area on Gauteng’s East Rand, following an intensive police investigation since Friday.
“We also seized four vehicles, including the blue VW Polo that was allegedly used during Dube’s murder. Two stolen handguns were also seized by police,” said Opperman.
He said police were continuing with their investigations and the five suspects would appear in court tomorrow.
The 43-year-old reggae star was shot dead on Thursday night in front of his teenage son and daughter in what police believed was a botched hijacking in Rosettenville.
His killers fled the scene in a blue VW Polo, leaving the musician’s grey Chrysler behind.
Police reported that his son, who was out of the car, ran to ask for help.
It was reported that a seven-member team was then handpicked by Gauteng police commissioner Perumal Naidoo, to investigate the case.
Poet Mzwakhe Mbuli, quoted in a Sunday newspaper, said Dube was murdered in “cold blood” and the incident was premeditated rather than an attempted hijack.
The newspaper also quoted a family spokesperson, Richard Siluma, who said he did not believe it was a hijacking.
Dube’s death has seen the country’s leaders, entertainment artists and others calling on South Africans to unite in fighting crime.
Before leaving to support the newly- crowned rugby World Cup champions in France on Friday, president Thabo Mbeki made an appeal to South Africans to confront the “scourge” of crime together.
